Colony Classics: Crescent Lounge by Vonnegut/Kraft

Vonnegut/Kraft’s iconic Crescent Lounge is a study in balance. Inspired by Ancient Egyptian headrests, the semi-circular bolster support rises above the frame to create a distinctive profile in Oak, Ash, or Walnut. This minimalist piece first launched in 2014, and would come to be a barometer for the studio’s designs moving forward. Katrina Vonnegut, co-creator and founder, noted it was the first piece they really felt they wanted to live with and have in their own home. “It’s still our most popular piece, and I think that’s because it's a timeless framework for many different iterations: upholstery, finishes and even custom sizes. It's the piece that has resonated with the most people, which I think has to do with the sculptural simplicity, the joinery, and playful elegance that can work in any space.”

Passages: Winter

WINTER
Sudeep Sen 2014

Couched on crimson cushions,

pink bleeds gold

and red spills into one’s heart.

Broad leather keeps time,

calibrating different hours

in different zones

unaware of the grammar

that makes sense.

Only random woofs and snores

of two distant dogs

on a very cold night

clears fog that is unresolved.

New plants wait for new heat —

to grow, to mature.

An old cane recliner contains

poetry for peace — woven

text keeping comfort in place.

But it is the impatience of want

that keeps equations unsolved.

Heavy, translucent, vaporous,

split red by mother tongues —

winter’s breath is pink.

Spec Sheet: Ledge Dining Table

Rituals help us make order of our most chaotic days. The dining room table has long been the Queen emblem of ritual where we can count on decompressing every evening. Many function not only as the nucleus of the kitchen, but also as workstations for those hold-out WFHers, making it more important than ever to invest in one built to last.

SSS Atelier’s Ledge Dining Table is anchored by organically-shaped solid wood legs inspired by the trees surrounding designer Sarah Sherman Samuel’s studio. It’s the double bullnose edge detail for us, as well as the option to go full wood or opt for a stone top in Viola, Rossa, Verde, or Crema marble.

Spec Sheet: Link Runner by Grain

Handmade in New England, the Link Runner marries two simple strips of braided wool of differing textures for a subtle contrast. Each rug is made to order using natural undyed English wool which we can confirm is as quality and robust as you’re imagining. These runners are available in a slew of colors as well as in indoor/outdoor sunbrella yarn.

Composed of two simple shapes bound together, the Link Runner series is endlessly customizable. We love working with the designers at Grain to come up with site-specific patterns suited for the exact dimensions of a hallway or tight entry area.

Curious to know what the Colony team is running on this autumn?

SAY SHE SHE

This Fall, Grace is currently powered by her first pair of bluetooth headphones, the musical stylings of Say She She, and natty wines on Friday nights at newly-opened Frog in her Bed Stuy neighborhood.

PLANT PROPOGATIONS

As for Jean, she’s downing Matcha Lattes with almond milk, ferociously dominating online estate auctions, and nurturing her extensive home plant propagations (they're all her babies) along with her actual baby, Colony’s perpetual petite employee of the month: Juno.

BKLYN Public Library

Mads is running on a BPL membership for all her bookish needs (see left), her morning coffee from Merriweather in the West Village and, quite literally, her pair of Hokas which have infused some serious pep in her running step.

Colony Classics: Puffer Chair by Moving Mountains

Initially it's the plush curves, the wisps of inviting Alpaca Bouclé that draw them to take a seat. Then there is the jolt of glee on the faces of clients who find themselves swiveling in the Moving Mountains’ Puffer Chair on our showroom floor. Originally conceived in 2016 with a kiln-dried solid Maple frame, and eight-way hand-tied coil spring, this Colony Classic simultaneously evokes lounge interiors of the 1970s and what designer Syrette Lew calls laid-back West coast living. Fabricated in a playful Alpaca Bouclé or suave golden mohair, this chair is also available COM.

Spec Sheet: Found II Side Table No. 1 by A Space

The women behind A Space Studio, Anna Aristova and Roza Gazarian, root their craft in a practice we’d all do well to emulate: treasuring the quotidian moments of beauty in our lives. They hand-picked each piece of marble for their limited edition Found Collection with the intention of accommodating its solitary imperfections. Each of the 14 tables are cut from a single piece of 10” thick marble; the grandeur of the natural material is amplified in a compelling contrast: one side displaying raw stone, the other, polished.

The Found II Side Table No. 1 exemplifies a refined, minimalist aesthetic while recalling the majesty of the stone’s source. When we can’t make it out to the mountains, this stunning table will do just fine.

Notes from the Curator, Fall 2023

Dear friends and colleagues,

We have watched in horror as the world has seemingly split in two. As such, we are foregoing our usual design content this week.

We are holding our loved ones close, offering unconditional support to our community, and deeply mourning the devastation before us all. We hope that you may do the same.

With love and grief,

At Large: Phaedra Collection by Bec Brittain

In Greek mythology, Phaedra was a Cretan princess whose name translates to bright. From the luminaries at Bec Brittain Studio, comes the new Phaedra collection, an exploration of form and light. The sleek lines of triangular prisms paralleling those of their oval chambers allows the dimensionality of the refracting units to pop. Once illuminated, the dynamic tension between the prisms and their elegant encasements produce graceful patterns and shadows like a captivating aurora cast across the night sky.

Versatility was top of mind when Bec designed this collection, and as a result it ranges from attention-commanding larger fixtures to more subtly sophisticated sconces. Inspired by the beauty of fresnel prisms developed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the early 19th century, Phaedra exudes a certain majesty we have come to love and expect from the studio.
