New Work from Grain: Clover

Last week we celebrated the debut of the Clover Collection here at Colony. Grain's second all-cork collection marks a fresh era for the newly B-Corp certified studio. A continued attention to sustainable design inspires pieces that bring the joy of natural forms into the home.

You’re Invited: Clover by Grain Opening at Colony

This Thursday, September 22 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Clover by Grain will be launching here at Colony.

Clover is a continuation of Grain’s ongoing research and fascination with cork, a material that is rapidly renewable, carbon positive, and completely biodegradable. The Clover collection is a soaring achievement that elegantly balances beauty and the belief that the choices we make as designers can have a positive impact on the world around us.

Fall Favorites: Our Guide to Local Eats

As the dog days of August give way to the welcomed relief of cool Autumn evenings, New Yorkers quietly begin to anticipate the transition from sun-soaked sidewalk cafes to cozy dinners indoors at their favorite eateries. We’re a particularly food-motivated team here at Colony, where we share cherry tomatoes and comically large zucchinis from our gardens, keep a snack cabinet even preppers would be impressed by and have been known to order bubble-tea for days on end to stave off the 2pm slog.

On Fridays we have family meals in our Canal Street showroom, where our desks become mosaics of perfectly pinched, piping hot Dim Sum Go Go or tabouli salad alongside stuffed pitas from Ba'al Cafe & Falafel.  Bubby's, a neighborhood institution, is our go to for TriBeCa’s best hot fried chicken sandwich or a preternaturally divine afternoon omelet.

Here we’ve compiled the restaurants that have earned our regular fall patronage, the places we can’t live without and wouldn’t want you to miss.

Mad’s Pick

When pressed to choose, Madeleine had to go with Prospect Heights' Leland Eating and Drinking House. Named for Randi Lee's great-uncle, Leland Chin, the atmosphere of Leland Eating and Drinking House fits the bill of family affair.

Ginger’s Pick

Williamsburg's The Four Horseman, a cozy natural wine bar with incredible small plates perfect for sharing, is Ginger’s pick for fall dining. Opened by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy in 2015, this is the place for wine-lovers and the wine-curious alike.

Ingemar’s Pick

Is it clear yet that our team is hot on the Brooklyn food scene? Ingemar is going with a Bed Stuy favorite, Chez Oskar. This delightful art-nouveau bistro serves up french classics alongside an array of enchanting house cocktails.

Alexis’ Pick

Alexis is new to the city, yet already Park Slope’s Miriam has won her over. She was wowed by the dips, the flavors, and colors on the table.

Jean’s Pick

A stone’s throw from Washington Square Park, Loring Place offers a vegetable-forward plethora of seasonal fare; Jean’s smitten with the mouth-watering Squash Blossom Pizza with Ricotta, honey and chilis. She’s equally enthusiastic about the hard-to-find kao man gai, a Thai street food served up at Woodside’s beloved SriPraPhai

Grace’s Pick

My neighborhood go-to is just a few doors down from Chez Oskar. Trad Room, a Japanese Izakaya bar on Malcolm X Blvd in Bed Stuy, has the most insanely tasty Dan Dan Noodles I’ve ever had (and I’ve done the leg work).

Wherever you enjoy your meals this fall, be sure to do it locally. Small business is the heart of our big city.

You’re Invited: Drink, Draw, Raffle at Colony

Next Wednesday, July 20 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, we will be hosting a fundraising Drink and Draw with raffle items from Colony designers and beyond benefiting the National Network of Abortion Funds.

At Colony, we believe that reproductive rights are human rights, and that abortion care is healthcare. We believe that denying women of basic healthcare and autonomy over our bodies is a patriarchal injustice that will most negatively impact women in low income communities as well as Black, Indigenous and women of color. We are enraged and saddened, and in our grief all we can do is use the tools we have at our disposal to help in what little way we can.

Please join us next Wednesday in unity to drink, draw, celebrate women and donate what we can to help those fighting this fight on our behalf every day.

Purchase raffle tickets (and see what's up for grabs) in advance of the event here.

JOIN, a group show

This month, we were so happy to invite you back into Colony for the opening of JOIN, a group show. We're proud of what our designers and our team were able to build together, even in the face of the uncertainty that has seemed to become our new normal.

The show will be installed through December 10th, so if you haven't yet, please stop by to experience the work and space that we feel represents a moment in time where our hope and reflection coalesce.

Sneak Peek: Cork Collection by Grain

Please enjoy a sneak peak of the Cork Collection by Grain, a body of work that began as a fascination with the material itself.

The realization of Grain’s meticulous research of cork’s material capabilities, this collection is a series of CNC lathed tables and a bench that highlight the formal longevity and environmental sustainability of Mediterranean cork. “We wanted to honor this extraordinary material first and foremost,” says Chelsea Minola of Grain. “We worked to take advantage of the block and cylinder forms that are standard in the cork production process and used these standards as the basic formal components of our final designs.” The results are at once monolithic and inviting, familiar and novel, and ultimately both sustainably functional and stunning.

See the Cork Collection and more introductions next week Here at Colony, 2021, our first exhibit since before the pandemic.

For the safety of all our guests and in compliance of NYC COVID regulations, we are accepting RSVPs for staggered entry, limiting capacity to 20 people at a time and checking names and vaccination cards upon arrival.
