Spec Sheet: Found II Side Table No. 1 by A Space

The women behind A Space Studio, Anna Aristova and Roza Gazarian, root their craft in a practice we’d all do well to emulate: treasuring the quotidian moments of beauty in our lives. They hand-picked each piece of marble for their limited edition Found Collection with the intention of accommodating its solitary imperfections. Each of the 14 tables are cut from a single piece of 10” thick marble; the grandeur of the natural material is amplified in a compelling contrast: one side displaying raw stone, the other, polished.

The Found II Side Table No. 1 exemplifies a refined, minimalist aesthetic while recalling the majesty of the stone’s source. When we can’t make it out to the mountains, this stunning table will do just fine.

Notes from the Curator, Fall 2023

Dear friends and colleagues,

We have watched in horror as the world has seemingly split in two. As such, we are foregoing our usual design content this week.

We are holding our loved ones close, offering unconditional support to our community, and deeply mourning the devastation before us all. We hope that you may do the same.

With love and grief,
Jean Lin

At Large: Phaedra Collection by Bec Brittain

In Greek mythology, Phaedra was a Cretan princess whose name translates to bright. From the luminaries at Bec Brittain Studio, comes the new Phaedra collection, an exploration of form and light. The sleek lines of triangular prisms paralleling those of their oval chambers allows the dimensionality of the refracting units to pop. Once illuminated, the dynamic tension between the prisms and their elegant encasements produce graceful patterns and shadows like a captivating aurora cast across the night sky.

Versatility was top of mind when Bec designed this collection, and as a result it ranges from attention-commanding larger fixtures to more subtly sophisticated sconces. Inspired by the beauty of fresnel prisms developed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the early 19th century, Phaedra exudes a certain majesty we have come to love and expect from the studio.

Passages: On Ambition

7 MEDITATIONS ON A WRITING LIFE
Carl Phillips, 2022

"A steady drive, without expectation. An acceptance that to be an artist is to commit to a lifelong apprenticeship to mastery over what cannot truly be mastered, since the definition of art—as with the evaluation of excellence—is ever shifting and always subjective. Accepting the fact of this—indeed, even embracing it will return you to that most important form of ambition that I mentioned earlier, the ambition for the world.....This ambition will keep your mind on the work, what matters most; as much as possible, let the work be everything; for the work will save you."

Spec Sheet: Lexan Console by Phaedo

Between slumber and consciousness is a sublime state we're all familiar with; Phaedo founder Morgan Spaulding endeavored to capture that out-of-reach feeling of waking from a dream in the Lexan Console. The Lexan series at large is characterized by playful organic shapes evocative of the designer's sculptural practice.

Says Spaulding, "It started out as a fun way of 3D-ing my drawings, and has become part of this new conception of reality: this disappearance into the space it occupies."

Layers of intersecting lexan sheets carefully fit together in this cubist-esque coffee table. For those looking for a glass aesthetic sans the fragility, the Lexan Console is the perfect fit.

Colony Classics: Radial Bed by KWH

The Radial Bed by Brooklyn-based woodworking studio KWH was first conceptualized for a Colony interiors project spotlighting designers in the co-op. It first made its debut in what feels like a lifetime ago: 2016. Founder Kai-wei Hsu was inspired by Jean Michel Frank’s exquisite straw marquetry practice; here it adds a distinct yet subtle radiance to the formidable foot and headboard. The bed’s arched edges further contribute to its simple elegance and the general craftsmanship focused attention to detail KWH has come to be known for.

Palette: Travertine

Ancient materials such as travertine have a way of humbling us, their monumental presence enforcing our own impermanence. This warm, natural stone has a characteristically weathered look resulting from carbon dioxide bubbling up and exiting during its formation around natural hot springs. This is evident in the Tibur Lounge, carved from a single block of unfilled Travertine by Studio Paolo Ferrari. Named for the Latin translation for modern day Tivoli, the city where Italian Travertine originates, the Tibur Lounge emanates permanence and solidity. This versatile stone, as seen on the elegant top of the Bombora Credenza by Vonnegut/ Kraft, pairs well with the classic finishes such as white oak, and can be equally successful in casual or more formal designs.

Passages: End of Summer

END OF SUMMER
Stanley Kunitz, 1953

An agitation of the air, A perturbation of the light
Admonished me the unloved year
Would turn on its hinge that night.

I stood in the disenchanted field
Amid the stubble and the stones,
Amazed, while a small worm lisped to me
The song of my marrow-bones.

Blue poured into summer blue,
A hawk broke from his cloudless tower,
The roof of the silo blazed, and I knew
That part of my life was over.

Already the iron door of the north
Clangs open: birds, leaves, snows
Order their populations forth,
And a cruel wind blows.

Spec Sheet: Monotype by Hiroko Takeda

Hiroko Takeda is paying attention. The acclaimed textile artist harnesses her phenomenological observations in her extraordinary, painterly weavings. Through her hand-looming process, she achieves harmony in contrasting materiality which asks the viewer to question their understanding of what a textile can and might be. Monotype’s diaphanous sheen evokes the properties of metal while its layered pattern injects a sense of motion. This polarity informs not only our experience of the piece, but perhaps of ourselves as well.

Spec Sheet: Vault 1 by Bec Brittain

Bec Brittain honors principles of cooperation not only in her intentionally small-scale and lauded studio, but also in her application of multi medium Vault series. In Vault 1 we see the use of both plated and enameled brass, wood, ceramic, leather, and concrete. A diamond globe juxtaposes its heavy base, drawing the eye along the thin curving lines punctuated by LED tubes. This distinguishing manifold light stands at human scale inviting its viewer to experience this sculptural piece from a point of visual mutuality.
