Spec Sheet: Pippi Nightstand

When envisioning the Pippi Nightstand, designer Ingemar Hagen Keith of Marmar Studio was guided by the silhouette of their cat Pippi's back. Through abstracting that silhouette into a simple but evocative shape, the nightstand showcases a striking contrast between volumes and surfaces heightened by the use of both oiled beech and whitewashed maple. A signature button-nose drawer pull reveals the space that the drawer handle occupies when opened.

Life/Design

We're not ready to open up the drawers of our nightstands with you, but we thought we'd share what's on top...

Poetry and more

The surface of Grace's nightstand is hardly underutilized. Currently she makes space for a copy of Border Vista Poems by Anni Li, a Lavender Moleskin journal, chapstick, plus a booklight and water glass her cat Penny loves to paw over.

Silver ridge aloe plant

Jean moved a struggling aloe plant to her bedside table because she was worried it needed more direct sunlight. Unfortunately, it now seems to be doing a little worse.

Story Collections

After finding both collections to be better enjoyed story by story (rather than cover to cover), Madeleine keeps Lucia Berlin's A Manuel for Cleaning Women and Clarice Lispector's The Complete Stories at arms length on her nightstand.

Spec Sheet: SSS Atelier Movement Table

Taking in the crystalline shores of Lake Michigan sparked inspiration for the designer and tastemaker Sarah Sherman Samuels; the quiet ripples on the water would become the 37 tiered layers of wood in the base of the Movement Dining Table by SSS Atelier. Featuring a reverse chamfer edge on its sizable top, this eye-catching piece emphasizes the beauty of natural Walnut, Oak, or Ebonized Oak. Mix and match finishes, or for a striking contrast, opt for an alluring stone top in Verde, Rossa, Crema, or Viola marble.

Spec Sheet: Upon Further Reflection Vanity

The Upon Further Reflection Vanity by Brooklyn-based Moving Mountains was originally created for an exhibition honoring female-identified artists and designers of all backgrounds, acknowledging the diversity within the Asian community; the differences and beauty within.

“The act of gazing at oneself can bring up complex emotions where the past and present collide. It can cause discomfort, fomenting self-criticality, or it can prompt feelings of reflection, pride and empowerment. The design of this vanity borrows elements from Chinese altar tables, which were traditionally used to worship ancestors. The mirror, with its undulating shape, is a reference to the stylized botanical motifs found in Hawaiian quilts, which allude to my experience growing up in Hawaii,” says designer and Moving Mountains founder, Syrette Lew.

“I was raised by a Chinese immigrant mother and Chinese-American father, surrounded by Chinese culture and values. Other Asian cultures and Hawaiian culture were also very prevalent in my community and for those who could claim part (hapa) Hawaiian ancestry, it was a real source of pride in the islands.

The Chinese Altar table symbolizes such confucian ideas as filial piety, humility, self sacrifice, and sits in conflict with the purpose of the vanity, a western invention used for displaying beautifying paraphernalia and for essentially paying tribute to oneself. This design sits at the intersection of Eastern, Pacific, and Western influences, reflecting my experience of various cultural traditions.”
