Spec Sheet: Gambit Coffee Table

Designer Sarah Sherman Samuel has an uncanny ability to create work that's both timely and lasting and her SSS Atelier pieces are crafted in West Michigan, close enough to her studio and office that she's able to keep a constant eye on prototyping and production. The line's latest release is the Gambit table, a checkerboard pattern rendered in contrasting stone that is as precise as it is inviting.

"In my work I enjoy the play with tension. The interest that builds when combining both old and new, light and heavy or raw and refined for example," says Sarah, expanding upon the point.  "There is that tension in the Gambit table first, within its blend of a postmodern inspired silhouette with classic materials and second, in how the opposing colored marble slabs are fused together to create a singular monolithic form where at a glance the weight of the stone is suspended just above the floor."

Passages: Autumn Again

IT'S THE SEASON I OFTEN MISTAKE
Ada Limón

Birds for leaves, and leaves for birds.
The tawny yellow mulberry leaves
are always goldfinches tumbling
across the lawn like extreme elation.
The last of the maroon crabapple
ovates are song sparrows that tremble
all at once. And today, just when I
could not stand myself any longer,
a group of field sparrows, flew up into
the bare branches of the hackberry
and I almost collapsed: leaves
reattaching themselves to the tree
like a strong spell for reversal. What
else did I expect? What good
is accuracy amidst the perpetural
scattering that unspools the world.

In Detail: The Source Collection

An ode to A Space co-founder Roza Gazarian's native Armenia, The Source collection translates the country's vibrant history and culture through reinvented forms and motifs. The collection was developed in Armenia's capital, Yerevan, fondly known as "The Pink City" for the distinct hue that volcanic tuff lends to local architecture. Brightest at sunrise and sunset, the pink palette illuminates a composite of medieval and Soviet building vernaculars.

The reductive geometries of the eleven limited edition pieces within The Source collection  highlight the many nuances of tuff, a rock made of compacted volcanic ash, in three natural shades: red, pink and black. Each piece was hand-carved by local craftsman who have a time-honored tradition of working in the material.

Spec Sheet: Bombora

Vonnegut/Kraft has a way with curves. Since the studio's inception, Brian Kraft and Katrina Vonnegut have created pieces that combine traditionally masculine and feminine typologies for an aesthetic that transcends trends. Such is true about the Bombora Credenza, solid and sinewy, a symphony of curves and volumes, the Bombora is the apex of Brian's skill and Katrina's design ingenuity. With an unfilled travertine top, and oak body and brushed brass pulls Bombora in its standard finishes can seamlessly live in a plethora of interiors as an elevated and functional accent piece.

Colony Classics: Shy Collection

The irony of Bec Brittain’s SHY Collection is just how gracefully eye-catching the fixtures are to behold. She first introduced SHY in 2011, coinciding with her studio launch in Brooklyn that same year. Design is a family affair for Bec, whose grandmother, Sarah Hitchcock Yerkes, (initials S.H.Y) was amongst the first women to receive a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard.

SHY examines form through lines of light while warm brass hardware tempers the glow and lends itself to a myriad of configurations to produce an ever evolving possibility of shape. Speaking to her inspiration, Bec notes “the SHY collection was conceived from a desire to draw with lines of light. I became captivated by the spare beauty of industrial fluorescent lighting and wanted to harness that simplicity to create more volumetric forms. SHY also marks the emergence of my systems-oriented approach: developing a set of modular components that serve as a formal "alphabet" I can revisit endlessly."

Spec Sheet: Jot Cabinet

The playful aesthetic we’ve come to expect from Marmar Studio is on full display in their latest creation, the Jot Cabinet. Made with charming inlays of contrasting wood species, the design explores flatness and dimensionality through wrapping along intersecting planes. The effect is a  shift in pattern which creates an ever dynamic constellation.

Founder Ingemar Hagen Keith’s design practice concentrates on the relationship between minimalism and familiarity, “The inspiration for the Jot Cabinet came about from a pair of pants I sewed using a deadstock Marimekko textile. When I cut from the fabric and assembled the pants, the original pattern of the textile was entirely reconfigured. Observing where lines serendipitously intersected and diverged, I was taken by the ways the flat graphic disrupted and enhanced the form. I am guided by the ethos of creating objects that have an innate sense of animation. The Jot Cabinet is a continuation of my recent works that have explored furniture objects that endear their users.”

In Detail: Giant Waffle By Hiroko Takeda

Hiroko Takeda’s textiles, particularly those in the Giant Waffle series, achieve a spellbinding and painterly quality through structured weaving. The artist plays with volume, color, and movement utilizing organic and synthetic fibers, animal fibers, metallic yarn, plastics, amongst others in these ongoing explorations of dimensionality. There’s striking variation within this collection, as in the ethereal falls of monofilament seen in Neptune or the vibrating grid of Gathering, both at right. We love the customizations in size and colorway we can tailor to any interior palette.
