LIFE/DESIGN

At Colony we believe that the best design is that which is well loved, used and lived in. Here are some of our favorite table-toppers for Mr. B.

Pretty Playing Cards

Have you ever watched Ken Burns' National Parks docuseries? Me neither, I fell asleep. I've heard it's wonderful though, and these pretty playing cards from Parks Project benefit national park conservation.

IGWS (it goes without saying) we love a card game with or without a new deck of cards. Our Gallery Coordinator, Grace's go-to is the Russian classic Durak

Flowers for Drying

You know when cut flowers start to smell like a hot wet sock? Avoid that situation entirely by choosing flowers that work dried as well. At Colony, we have inadvertently tested out MANY flower varieties, and topping our list for self-drying flowers are eucalyptus and our Art Director Madeleine's favorite, Craspedia.

Always be snacking

We love snacks. And we're certainly not turning our noses up at a bag of pretzels. But some appetizers and homemade snacks are too easy to pass up. Colony founder Jean's current obsession are these Taiwanese Snowflake Crisps. She makes them with dried cranberries and pistachios but any nut and dried fruit combination works. Here's a recipe to get you started.

After Mary Oliver

SONG FOR AUTUMN

Mary Oliver - 2005-

Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now
how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don’t you think
the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for

the fires that will come—six, a dozen—to sleep
inside their bodies? And don’t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

Dream Home by Brian Kaspr

Colony is thrilled to be showcasing artist and designer Brian Kaspr’s latest installation, Dream Home, painted remnants pulled from a house slated for planned demolition. The installation serves as the sole memento of an ambitious creative process spanning the course of seven days. A journey of creation and destruction, the first four days saw the of the house a blank canvas, where Kaspr and his team covered every square inch of surface area with the artist’s trademark exuberant neon brushstrokes and paint splatters; the remaining three days witnessed the unraveling of it all.

Dream Home opens November 10, 5-8 PM and runs through the month of November.

New Work from Studio Paolo Ferrari: Editions 4

A continued exploration in form and proportion, Studio Paolo Ferrari's Editions 4 features a wide range of materials from hand-formed wrought-iron frames to glossy lacquered finishes. Set against our white brick walls, the Lido's sofa near-neon upholstery and Mr. B's oxblood finish strike a bold profile. While we envision these pieces to be equally successful rendered in more subdued tones, we're enjoying the celebratory hues here at Colony.

Fall Favorites: Our Guide to Local Eats

As the dog days of August give way to the welcomed relief of cool Autumn evenings, New Yorkers quietly begin to anticipate the transition from sun-soaked sidewalk cafes to cozy dinners indoors at their favorite eateries. We’re a particularly food-motivated team here at Colony, where we share cherry tomatoes and comically large zucchinis from our gardens, keep a snack cabinet even preppers would be impressed by and have been known to order bubble-tea for days on end to stave off the 2pm slog.

On Fridays we have family meals in our Canal Street showroom, where our desks become mosaics of perfectly pinched, piping hot Dim Sum Go Go or tabouli salad alongside stuffed pitas from Ba'al Cafe & Falafel.  Bubby's, a neighborhood institution, is our go to for TriBeCa’s best hot fried chicken sandwich or a preternaturally divine afternoon omelet.

Here we’ve compiled the restaurants that have earned our regular fall patronage, the places we can’t live without and wouldn’t want you to miss.

Mad’s Pick

When pressed to choose, Madeleine had to go with Prospect Heights' Leland Eating and Drinking House. Named for Randi Lee's great-uncle, Leland Chin, the atmosphere of Leland Eating and Drinking House fits the bill of family affair.

Ginger’s Pick

Williamsburg's The Four Horseman, a cozy natural wine bar with incredible small plates perfect for sharing, is Ginger’s pick for fall dining. Opened by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy in 2015, this is the place for wine-lovers and the wine-curious alike.

Ingemar’s Pick

Is it clear yet that our team is hot on the Brooklyn food scene? Ingemar is going with a Bed Stuy favorite, Chez Oskar. This delightful art-nouveau bistro serves up french classics alongside an array of enchanting house cocktails.

Alexis’ Pick

Alexis is new to the city, yet already Park Slope’s Miriam has won her over. She was wowed by the dips, the flavors, and colors on the table.

Jean’s Pick

A stone’s throw from Washington Square Park, Loring Place offers a vegetable-forward plethora of seasonal fare; Jean’s smitten with the mouth-watering Squash Blossom Pizza with Ricotta, honey and chilis. She’s equally enthusiastic about the hard-to-find kao man gai, a Thai street food served up at Woodside’s beloved SriPraPhai

Grace’s Pick

My neighborhood go-to is just a few doors down from Chez Oskar. Trad Room, a Japanese Izakaya bar on Malcolm X Blvd in Bed Stuy, has the most insanely tasty Dan Dan Noodles I’ve ever had (and I’ve done the leg work).

Wherever you enjoy your meals this fall, be sure to do it locally. Small business is the heart of our big city.
