Rhode Island based designer Meg Callahan of M.Callahan Studio is known for her textile works that focus on the beauty and complexity of construction. These custom commissioned Shaw Drapes are fashioned using a Korean piecing technique called Bojagi or Pojagi. Bojagi are traditional Korean wrapping cloths with varied use, from weddings to Buddhist rites, in keeping with the belief of some folk religions that wrappings safeguard good luck.
Meg describes the process of adapting this technique for drapery as one where, “Fabric pieces are patchworked together, seams are folded over into themselves and sewn to lock in the edges. This style of seam-work creates an opaque 'line' where the fabrics are joined much like leading in stained glass windows and produces a two-sided fabric. When hung as a curtain, the changes in opacity from fabric to seam are emphasized.”
The resulting hangings, like the drapes pictured here in the home of a dear friend, are highly individual site-specific commissions. The Shaw Drapes filter natural light while adding an ethereal texture to the room.
